Burn Permit Request 

WHEN YOU HAVE CHECKED "I AGREE" BELOW AND CLICK "SUBMIT" YOUR PERMIT HAS BEEN APPROVED.  PLEASE NOTE THIS PERMIT IS ONLY VALID FOR THE DATES SPECIFIED. 

Fires set under this permit must be in accordance with the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Regulation 388/97, Subsection 2.6.3.4 and the penalties provided therein are applicable.

OVERVIEW

  • The fire shall be constantly attended by a competent adult until the fire is extinguished.
  • Fire to be limited between the hours of 0800 hours and 1800 hours daily (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).
  • All fires must be out after 1800 hours (6:00 p.m.).
  • Burning is to be limited to the area approved/inspected.
  • Weather conditions must be favourable – no fire shall be set out at any time the wind velocity exceeds 5 MPH.
  • The combustible material to be burned will be dry and not produce dense or noxious smoke.
  • No burning of petroleum products, roofing materials, tires, railroad ties, etc.
  • All neighbours should be notified. Complaints from neighbours may terminate permit.
  • Any contravention will terminate permit.

GENERAL PROVISIONS REQUIREMENTS BY MUNICIPAL BYLAW

  • Permission is not required from the Fire Chief and or By-law Officer for open air burnings associated with the use of open burning devices or pits specifically designed for open air burnings, provided that each of the following regulations are complied with open air burning may only be conducted between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and midnight. No person shall set or maintain an open air bum in a device or pit between midnight and 9:00 a.m.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open bum unless confined to open burning devices or to a pit no larger than 2 feet (61cm) by 2 feet (61cm) in size. When in use , the open burning devices or pit shall be covered with heavy gage metal screen have mess size no larger than Yz inch (Bern) and which is positioned in such a manner as to preclude the escape of combustible material including ash.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open burn unless no more than  8 inches (21 cm) of the containment area shall be above grade with a total maximum depth of 16 inches (42 cm).
  • No person shall set/maintain an open burn with materials other than commercially produced charcoal, briquettes or clean, dry seasoned wood, not including pressure treated wood or creosote treated wood maybe burned.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open burn unless the dimensions of the wood being burnt are not greater than the size of the device or fire pit and shall be totally confined within the device and or pit at all times.
  • No person shall set/maintain an.open burn unless confined to a location that provides for the minimum distance of 9 feet (3 M) in all directions from adjacent properties.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open air burning unless confined to an area that is a minimum of 24 feet (8 M) from any combustible structure or objects.
  • No person shall kindle or maintain any bonfire or rubbish fire or authorize any such fire to be kindled or maintained on or in any public street, alley, road or other public ground.
  • No person shall kindle or maintain a fire upon the land of another without the permission of the owner or agent and or Fire Chief or By-law Officer.
  • No person shall throw down or drop any lighted match, _cigar, cigarette or other burning substance in any combustible material or in close proximity thereto.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open air burning unless an effective extinguishing agent of sufficient size and with the capacity of extinguishing the fire is immediately available for use.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open air burning unless attended, controlled and supervised by an adult (someone over the age of 16yrs of age) at all times and shall ensure the fire is completely extinguished before clearing the area.
  • No person shall set/maintain an open air burning when the wind exceeds 30 kilometers per hour or during rainy or foggy weather or at times when a smog alert has been declared by the Ministry of Environment For Ontario (Provincial) & or Canada (Federal).
  • No person shall set/maintain an open air burning unless steps are taken to ensure adjacent properties and persons are protected from fire and smoke hazards. Should such a complaint be received by the Township Fire Dept, Ontario Provincial Police and or the By-law/Provincial Offences Officer regarding public safety and welfare from fire and smoke hazards or health concerns, the Fire Dept, OPP and or By-law Officer will have the discretion to determine the compliance and his I her decision will be final.

Open Air Burning Regulation - Bylaw 2011-12

IT IS THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE MUNICIPALITY THAT THE BEARER OF THIS PERMIT SHALL BE SOLELY LIABLE FOR ANY OR ALL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM OPEN BURNING.
